Some thoughts on… Being Thankful

Entering the new year, I am recognizing all the things for which I am thankful.  I am lucky enough to be with family and friends over the next few weeks, and I hope you are as well.

In addition, our country stands in a favorable position at this moment.

·      The economy is strong – employment is high, inflation is low.

·      The government is working – public goods are funded, the law is upheld, voting is safe and accessible.

·      The country is secure – there are no military troops on the ground internationally or domestically.

·      The Press and academic institutions are free and independent.

·      American citizens can travel the world safely.

A critical Buddhist belief is in the impermanence of life (Annika). It is the idea that the world is in a constant state of change — nothing lasts forever.  In bad times, difficult situations will eventually pass. In good times, we should appreciate what we have.

Much can be lost or gained in a few years, so let’s be thankful for all that we have now.  Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.
